Improvisation for Adults
(Or green acting because there is no paper involved!) Come to play, off the cuff. Improvisation is an amazing tool to use in any situation. Learning to think on your feet can help you become much more confident in presenting information to any kind of audience. In this class, you will learn the basic principles of improvisational theatre. Don’t worry if you have never been on stage in your life. We will start by going over the actors most precious tools: voice, body, and imagination. Through a myriad of games and exercises, you will learn to connect with your scene partner, the space, and your body. Some things to be covered: object work, improvised monologues, group games (some you may have seen on Who’s Line is it anyway?), physical, and musical improvisation. And look Ma, no script!
Creating a Character
In this class, students will hone their acting skills by focusing on the creation of a character. Each class will focus on different aspects of a character from how the character walks and talks to how to figure out what the character wants and how this affects his/her actions. Class will culminate in a performance showcase.
Exploring a Character
In this class, students will have the opportunity to take a beginners look into the art of acting. With a proper introduction of theatrical terms as well as exercises to motivate acting technique; students will be able to apply acquired skills in developing a character of their choice. The students will have the opportunity to embody a character using physicality, true emotions and the use of costumes and props. The class will culminate to a final showcase where each individual participant will have a chance to present their work to their peers.
Creative Composition and Performance
Students in the class will become a creative company with practice in writing, designing, and performing new work generated by the class. The class will culminate with a performance of a piece written, designed, and performed by the students. This class welcomes students who are interested in acting as well as students who have an interest in writing and designing for theatre.
Auditioning 101
This class will provide the participants with the opportunity to collaborate with a professional casting director in preparation for a two minute audition piece. Each participant with be given suggestions and feedback through mock auditions as well as group and individual work. The participant will leave this class with a completed audition as well as alternate monologues/songs that will help to best demonstrate the actors’ abilities. The class will culminate to a final showcase of audition pieces in front of professional casting directors and their peers.
For the Young at Heart
This class will allow participant to fully engage in the joy of theatre through improvisational exercises as well as character exploration that will stretch their minds and their bodies. The class will include everything from hand to hand combat to comedic timing. Specifically designed for the “aspiring actor” or the “veteran thespian;” this class will leave you feeling challenged and refreshed. The class will culminate to a final showcase designed by the participants and the director, displaying their theatrical capabilities.
Scene Study
This class is designed to introduce or enhance your knowledge of basic acting skills through the use of scenes. You will be introduced to vocal and physical techniques that will allow you to play a variety of roles. We will work on analyzing the scenes and some effective text exercises for the preparation of acting. You will experience as many different scene partners and genre’s as you can and leave the course feeling comfortable with relating to the script.
Musical Theatre Scene Study
This is for all the aspiring triple threats. Sing, Dance, and Act! Come and learn about the origins and techniques of Musical Theatre while exploring these principles through scene work. This is a beginner level class where you will explore acting through song and dance as well as the emotional intensity required to bring more to performance through song. We will explore some of the standards like Rogers and Hammerstein as well as perform current musical theatre like Rent. We will teach basic musical theatre movement to get you more comfortable with your dance skills while incorporating all into individual and group scene performance. If you think you are only proficient at one or two “threats”, don’t worry. In this class we will use your individual talents and teach you how to capitalize on your strengths while successfully learning stronger techniques and improving those aspects of musical theatre you are less comfortable with. Come play and sing!
